Eissinger’s innovative safe-T-seat is ready after six years of research
and development of a mid-mounted bicycle seat that allows a child to sit
between the adult rider and the handlebars. Her hope was to provide parents
with a safer and easier way to enjoy family bike rides.
“As a cycling parent I was familiar with all of the traditional family
cycling options and just felt that there had to be a better way for everyone to
enjoy the ride,” Eissinger said. “The bicycle trailers were too hot and dusty
for my kids and I always felt like rear-mounted seats put too much weight on
the back of my bike — making maneuvering the bike more difficult. I also found
that the European and Canadian mid-mounted seats often didn’t fit my
American-made bicycle or had a complicated mounting
system that took forever to attach.”
Eissinger’s safe-T-seat design includes a unique and easy mounting
system, a better fit for bicycles made in the USA and a slightly higher
mounting position that saves the adult rider’s knees from the scrapes and
bruises that result from hitting the underside of the seat. She has also worked
with Phil Cutler, the father of the bicycle helmet, to
make sure her design met all ASTM 1625-00 standards for rear-mounted seats.
Eissinger is in the process of petitioning the ASTM to create safety standards
for mid-mounted seats.
Eissinger’s
safe-T-seat will make its industry debut at the Interbike International Expo
where more than 1,000 exhibitors and nearly 20,000 paid attendees from 60-plus
countries including specialty bicycle retailers, specialty outdoor retailers,
specialty fitness retailers, general sporting goods
retailers and trade and consumer media will gather. This year’s show will
become center
stage for thousands of newly launched cycling
products and has a rich tradition of bringing together industry leaders for
insightful seminars, profitable meetings and a general “good time.”
“I
attended Interbike as an industry observer back in 2003 and literally had to
catch my breath as I walked in the door and was immediately surrounded by
hundreds of booths and thousands of cycling experts and enthusiasts,” Eissinger
said. “I made it my goal then and there to return to the show as an exhibitor
so I could really feel the thrill of participating as an exhibiting vendor. I
can’t tell you how excited I am to really be a part of
the show this year.”
